YSISS Sibu to open mid-year, ahead of schedule

The Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) Sibu, the pride and joy of the riverine town and the central region, is set to open in the middle of this year, ahead of its originally targeted opening in 2026, said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

The Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak revealed that the students and teachers are already in place, although they are temporarily housed at YSISS Kuching.

“All of them are expected to relocate to Sibu by the middle of this year,” said Dr Annuar.

The Nangka assemblyman highlighted that YSISS would adopt the Cambridge syllabus, with students sitting for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

“Our goal is clear — the best students, especially those from rural areas and low-income families, must be given the opportunity to study at an international school. We hope that, God willing, they will one day further their studies at world-renowned universities.

“This is because the IGCSE qualifies them for entry into international universities – this being a key advantage of the school.

“We often see physical development like roads, electricity, water, and bridges, but at the same time, the Sarawak government is also investing in quality education to build a better future for Sarawak’s children,” Dr Annuar emphasised.

He regarded the establishment of international schools by the Sarawak government as a vital step in making Sarawakians global citizens.

According to him, YSISS Sibu would be the third international school to operate in Sarawak, with two others expected to commence operations soon.

For the record, Yayasan Sarawak’s two international schools at Petra Jaya and Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road are already operational, with Sibu next in line.

Betong, Bintulu, and Miri will have one YSISS each in the future.

Dr Annuar assured that students would be accepted if they meet the entry criteria, regardless of racial or religious backgrounds.

He also pointed out that the B40 (low-income) group would be provided free education, the M40 (medium income) would be charged a minimal fee, while the T20 (high income) group would pay fees lower than those of private international schools.
